Apollo invests Rs 120 crore in city hospital

Apollo Hospitals, the largest health care chain in Asia with a bed strength of over 8000, has invested Rs 120 crore in setting up a 300-bed multi-specialty hospital in the city.

The hospital, spread over seven acres, is set to be functional from the middle of January 2010. It will have a pool of 70 super specialists.

This would be the 47th hospital of the Apollo Hospitals Group in the country and the healthcare major plans to expand the 300-bed hospital into a 500-bed one later.

As a part of its expansion plan, Apollo has lined up an investment of Rs 1800 crore in setting up 16 more hospitals across the country.

“These hospitals are expected to be operational by the end of December 2011 and will take our bed strength to over 10000”, said Prathap C Reddy, chairman, Apollo Hospitals.

“We also have plans to set up the Apollo Knowledge Health City spread over 100 acres. The location and other details for this project are yet to be worked out but we aim to commission it by 2015”, he stated.

Talking on its city project, he said, “The Apollo Hospital in Bhubaneswar is an integral part of our vision of touching a billion lives. The hospital will not only provide medical facilities of international standards to the people of Orissa but will go a long way in fulfilling the training needs in healthcare in the entire region”.

“Cities like Bhubaneswar will play an instrumental role in taking heallthcare to the next level. These cities have huge opportunities in store for healthcare both from the demand and the supply side”, he told reporters.

The Apollo Hospital will offer a whole gamut of specialites like cardiology, cardiac surgery, medical and surgical gastroenterology, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, nephrology, urology, obstetrics and gynaecology, dermatology and radiation oncology to name a few.

The hospital will have 33 critical beds including neonatal intensive care units, five operation theatres including one dedicated to obstetrics and gynaecology and eight dialysis beds.

Besides, the hospital will have an advanced emergency unit and a round the clock pharmacy store.

Apollo Hospitals is also mulling to set up 2-3 smaller hospitals in the state under the 'Apollo Reach' banner. These hospitals would also offer super-specialty treatment. The locations of such hospitals in Orissa, cost and other details are yet to be finalizedt, said Reddy. Besides, we will set up four more satellite clinics in Orissa and establish tele-medicine centres which would cover almost all the districts of the state, he added. The first Apollo Reach Hospital wasen opened in Karimnagar (Andhra Pradesh) and the healthcare major plans to set up 50 such hospitals throughout the country.
