The Asian markets pared gains after opening on a positive note but ended mostlly up.

The Hang Seng advanced 103 points to 18,361.

The Nikkei added 74 points to 9,344.

The Straits Times and the Seoul Composite were flat at 2,396 (up 7 points) and 1,432 (up 11 points), respectively.

The Taiwan Weighted gained 41 points at 6,780.

However, the Sanghai Composite was marginally down four points to 3,183.
