The Hang Seng has tumbled 597 points to 13,512. The Nikkei has plunged 386 points to 8,012.

The Taiwan Weighted index has shed 170 points at 4,346. The Straits Times index has dropped 27 points to 1,663, and the Seoul Composite index has declined 23 points to 1,035.

The Shanghai Composite index is down 14 points at 1,881.
