| Assocham identifies 12 focus industries |

Tamil Nadu should focus on 12 crucial areas to increase its gross domestic product to over Rs 7 lakh crore by 2020, according to Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham)’s Vision 2020, a study on state’s industry prospects.
The focus sectors include IT, tourism, small and medium enterprises, power, health tourism, ports, food processing, film industry, special economic zone, leather, biotech, advance research and disaster management. The economy should have a compound annual growth rate of more than ten per cent to achieve the target, it pointed out.
“IT needs attention in Tamil Nadu since it has emerged as a hub for software in the last decade and the production here touched a high of Rs 28,490 crore during 2007-08. To sustain the growth, the state should create a knowledge-driven ecosystem, leveraging entrepreneurship and promoting socially inclusive growth,” said Assocham president Sajjan Jindal unveiling the paper.
