On the heels of the fee hike by the premier Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), second-rung B-Schools, too, have hiked their fee from anywhere between 10 and 50 per cent this year. For most non-IIMs, the increase in fee this year follows the hike in salaries of University Grants Commission (UGC) scale faculty members.
XLRI Jamshedpur’s fee hike, for instance, this year is about 17.95 per cent for the 2009 batch onwards. The 2008-2010 batch pays Rs 7.5 lakh.
XLRI Jamshedpur’s director, E Abraham S J, says: "Normally as a matter of routine, we hike about 10-15 per cent of fees to meet the inflation. This year we have hiked another five per cent which will help us partially to pay for the arrears of the Sixth Pay Commission for the faculty and staff. Unlike the IIMs, we do not receive any grant from the government. Nor do we raise funds. So, fees have to rise.”
SP Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR), too, has gone in for a higher fee hike than usual. It is now charging Rs 2.5 lakh a year from the 2008 session, instead of the existing Rs 2 lakh a year. Usually, the institute implements a fee hike between 10-15 per cent. But this year, it has gone in for a 25 per cent hike, keeping in mind the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission.
KIIT School of Management has hiked fees for its Post Graduate Program in Management (PGPM) and Post Graduate Program in Rural Management (PGRM), applicable from the academic session of 2009-10. It has announced a hike of Rs 1 lakh for both the two- year courses. Students will have to pay Rs 7.5 lakh for PGPM course and Rs 6.5 lakh for PGRM course.
Regional College of Management (RCM) Director, Pabir Pal, said the institute was yet to take a call on increasing fee for the two-year MBA programme from Rs 1.8 lakh to 2.80 lakh. “A fee of Rs 2.80 lakh for management programme would be reasonable, as compared to other management institutes in the city,” says Pal.
Biju Patnaik Institute of Information Technology and Management Studies (BIITM) is also planning to raise fees for the regular management programme from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 2.25 from the 2009-10 session.
Fees at Xavier Institute of Social Service (XISS) Ranchi, will take a leap of around Rs 15,000. “The proposal will be approved by the governing body soon. The fee hike was necessary to meet the expenditures towards the increased salary structure for faculty members and infrastructure development in the next two years,” says Benni Ekka, director of XISS. The personnel management course at XISS, the oldest among other courses, now costs about Rs 1.13 lakh while the other two flagship courses, rural development and information management, now cost Rs 1.14 lakh and Rs 1.22 lakh, respectively.
TA Pai Management Institute, Manipal, on its part, has decided on increasing its fees by 50 per cent for its two-year management course from Rs 4 lakh to Rs 6 lakh from the 2008-09 session.
