Bank strike on July 3 to protest SBI merger
Press Trust of India / Vadodara June 16, 2009, 16:41 IST

All India Bank Employees' Association (AIBEA) and All India Bank Officers' Association (AIBOA) have announced their decision to go on strike on July 3 protesting the merger of six associate banks with the State Bank of India (SBI).

"To express our protest against this unwarranted move, members of the All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) and All India Bank Officers' Association (AIBOA) working in the subsidiary banks will be obeserving a nation-wide strike in the subsidiary banks on July 3 this year," C H Venkatachalam, General Secretary of AIBEA said.

The strike action will be supported by all other bank employees in all the banks throughout the country, he said.

The National General Council of AIBEA will be meeting in Mumbai on 9th and 10th of July from where the strike actions in all the banks will be decided upon, he said.

Meanwhile, SBI Chairman O P Bhatt said that the bank is in the process of merger which will not take more than three to six months.

The reason behind this move was to make SBI one of the top ten banks of the world, Bhatt added.
