Bank unions to decide next move on March 5
BS Reporter / Bhubaneswar Mar 02, 2009, 00:40 IST

With the ninth bipartite wage settlement of bank employees ending inconclusively and the Union finance minister not giving any concrete assurance on revision of salaries, the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), an umbrella organisation of nine bank unions in India, has decided to meet in Chennai on March 5 to decide its future course of action.

"UFBU has decided to meet in Chennai on March 5 to decide on their future course of action. In that meeting, we will take a call on whether the bank employees across the country would go for a strike to press for their demands," said G D Nadaf, general secretary, All India State Bank Officers' Federation (AISBOF).

He was speaking at the annual general body meeting of the Orissa circle of the State Bank of India (SBI) Officers' Association.

UFBU had approached the finance minister Pranab Mukherjee on February 27 after the ninth bipartite wage settlement of bank employees ended inconclusively on February 22.

While the finance minister said that the code of conduct of the ensuing Lok Sabha elections in the country would not be a deterrent in announcing the salary revision for bank officers, he did not give any concrete assurance on the issue, said Nadaf.

The ninth bipartite wage settlement of bank employees across the country ended inconclusively in Mumbai after the UFBU spurned the offer made by the Indian Bank Association (IBA). IBA had offered only 13 per cent hike in salaries as against 30 per cent demanded by UFBU.

Besides revision in wages, the bank employees have demanded introduction of the pension scheme for the employees and re-introduction of compensatory appointment in the banking sector.

Speaking on the occasion, G Muthuswamy, general secretary, SBI Officers Association (Bangalore circle), said, "The officers of SBI work under intense pressure and there is no manpower planning by the bank management. The management should lay emphasis on proper manpower planning for optimum utilisation of its human resources."

A K Motayad, secretary, Orissa Unit of All India Bank Officers' Confederation said, "Apart from salary revision, we should also demand better service conditions so that we live a life of dignity and are able to spend quality time with our families. We want a respectable pay revision with regulated working hours and other non-financial benefits."

It is the adamant stand of IBA which is delaying the wage revision and 2nd option of pension for Bank employees. UFBU should take firm stand and put the entire banking industry to a halt in March 2010 itself so that the objective are achieved early. Responsiblity should be fixed for IBA team/Govt Officers are playing with the employees/Public/Govt exchequer. It is a history of 40 years that Mighty Unions have bended the Mighty IBA/Govt.I do not know why IBA/GOVT always creates hurdles when they have to bow down before the mighty unions/associations.Loss of exchequer on account of strike by bankmen should be recovered from IBA/Govt officers who are not competent enough to visualise the strength of Unions and mert if demands of the Bankmen.

IBA has called UFBU for further negotiation on 11/5/2009 Prior to that UFBU will meet on 10/5/2009 Let us hope all things go well and we achieve our Genuine Demands

Dear Mr.Thakral, still do you think things to go well?
Posted by: CRA
comeon guys, break the ice please. why so secrecy over wage revision issue. If no alternate we are ready for strike. why bank employees are being denied their justified right of wage revision when all the other government organisations(employee unions )succeeded in getting their things done. make a move
Posted by: Raj
Perhaps bank employees/officers have been blindly striking work at the behest of politicians. Can anybody count how many times we have struck work for our rights. We are playing in the hands of politicians.

I agree with Mr Satyanarayan Sir. Pl visit www.aiboc.com and read circular No.24 dated 3/4/2009 which clearly shows that allout efforts being made by our apex organisations to get the issues of 2nd Option of Pension and wagerevision expedited. May they succeed forthe benefit of all those waiting i.e. Retirees and In service Bankmen.

DESPITE THE ENTIRE FACTS BEFORE US, ONE CAN NOT APPRECIATE THE NON COMMUNICATION OF LEADERS WITH THEIR MEMBERS THAT TOO AT A POINT WHEN EVERY BODY HAS BECAME SO CURIOUS TO KNOW THE FATE OF THE SUBJECT AND COURSE OF ACTION PROPOSED. THE LEADERS CAN NOT AND PROBABLY MAY NOT DO SO.THEY MUST REALIZE THIS FACT AND LET THE MASS TO KNOW.

Dear Mr Thakral, The fact that we had a great tradition that produced leaders like Sardar Patel, Netaji Bose, Lokmanya Tilak etc., does now infer that our current political leaders are GREAT. Whatever has been the tradition does not make the people occupying these chairs worthy of their position. I have seen how these leaders spend the coffers of Union moneys for personal good, and that makes me cringe. If you really think that they are a self-sacrificing lot, you are entitled to your opinion, but that does not make a black any more paler than it already is.
    Posted by: Thakral
OK I am no body to prevail my opinion on you. But a positive thought always give peace and solace. Let us wish Good is achieved by the leaders. We should not look what others do but we should try to do positive and think positive.
Posted by: lokanadharao
I agree with the views and respect the sentiments of Mr.Thakral . Any leader, worth the name, takes a balanced view and definitely UFBU leadership of 9 Unions will decide the course of action in a matured way for the benefit of the majority of the members.Of course, the leaders do communicate with the members and the members should wait with some patience and repose faith in the leadership at this junctue.

Mr. Thakral, I think either you've very wrong image about these bank union leaders or SOME ONE FROM THEM knows who you are and that you are posting here.. otherwise this level of subservience and sycophancy to our "REVERED" leaders is not really understood by me.

Dear Friend., I hope you could have gone through the Histrory of Mr H L Parvana, Comrade Tarakeshwari Chakarvorty, Com NS Purao., Com SR Sen Gupta., Com TSK Chari, Com Eswaran who have sacrificed thwir whole life for the betterment of lot of bankmen. Just become a small leader of any group/asociation/ or a Branch Manager and then just see how much labour and efforts you have to make to keep the house/branch/association going. Even when you are a father you a leader of your children and just imagine the role being father and your efforts to keep them happy and fulfill their demands and aspirations. I hope you will realise and have some positive opinion for such leaders and Hope you will surely get some good news after the elections.

The bankmen of the country are really great. They are still waiting a miracle from the so called leaders choosen by them. They do't know that the leaders have already sold themselves for their personal gains.

Sir, I hope you are a banker having good nos of service. All Over the years Unions have been negotiating handsome wage revision and best of all service conditions for Bankers/employees. Whatever social status we are commanding in society by being a bank employees is only the hard work of tradeUnions leaders and solidarity by all friends in Banks. Let us loose heart. There is nothing like sale out- Rest assured Gold is in store for each of the employees/officers by way of HANDSOME WAGE INCREASE AND 2ND OPTION OF PENSION WHICH IS A SOCIAL SECURITY REQUIREMENT AND OUR LEADERS INTEND TO ALLOW ALL RETIREES TO LEAD A RESPECTFUL LIFE AS PENSIONER.
Posted by: THAKRAL
Attention our Revered leaders of UFBU., Sir, Large number of Bank employees are visiting sites of AIBOC,BEFI,NCBE,NOBO to know the latest developments on 2ND OPTION OF PENSION AND WAGE REVISION BUT THEY ARE DISAPPOINTED BY NOT FINDING ANY INFORMATION. LOT OF RUMOURS ARE GOING ON IN THE BANKING ARENA. IT WILL BE APPRECIATED IF YOU PLEASE BREAK THE SILENCE AND GIVE HAPPY NEWS ON ANTICIPATED WONDERFUL ACHIEVEMENTS ON BOTH THE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUES. I HOPE OUR WORTHY LEADERS ARE LISTENING

Mr Thakral, I can't understand the reason why the news pertaining to the proceedings of the 5th march 2009, meeting is being kept secret. One day or the other it has to come out. WHY NOT EARLIER THAN LATER.Why this politics? The leaders are playing with the lives of so many employees and retirees. This is not a good augury for any responsible union. This is the reason why employees are agitated about the attitude of the so called leaders. I hope good sense will prevail on those people responsible and we receive the latest news on this portal.

Why all of you are waiting for wage settlement. The leaders have already sold themselves in exchange of 2nd option of pension for them and their retired " Gurus". Almost all the leaders are either due for retirement or decided for VRS as they find themselves unfit for present banking environments. So please don't expect any major increase in wages as we have to pay the cost of electing/ selecting these impotent leaders to represent ourselves.

I understand that some negotiations are going on. But the organisations are keeping it to their hearts. Hope my understandings comes out to be true and negotiations may be really taking place. But No concrete information is coming. Hope our prayer will have affect on the leaders and they will break the silence by giving us Happiest News of grant of 2nd option of Pension to all Both Retirees Friends and In service colleagues and Handsome Increase in wages of in service bankmen.
    Posted by: ADMISRA
SIR, YOUR LANGUAGE IS FIRM BUT POLIT. IS THIS GOING TO APPEAL THE LEADRES. THEY HAVE CHOSE TO BE RETICENT ON THE MATTER. NONE OF THE ORGANIZATION IS APPRISING ITS MEMBERS IN AN ARENA WHERE INFORMATION IS A NEW COLUMN. may good sense prevail on them.
Posted by: Duke
Any way most of these leaders are close to retuirement, so they'd more be interested in post-superannuation benefits for their cushy asses. So we wont really be in for a surprise if they accept a mediocre wage increase and tell us to shut on account of GRAVITY of situation and how they have salvaged the deal by taking such a NI....CE pension / retirement option for all of "US" I am losing hope day by day....
    Posted by: Duke
I do not think anyone in politics is there for a "greater good" all of them have something to achieve/benefit personally. If someone really is portraying this aspect, people really must be thought to be naive.. I have seen the kind of SACRIFICEs our leaders require to give in. Anyway.. Also the kinda advances portfolios that you are insinuating are because of intervention of Govt./politicians/top management only. If the govt can announce such meaty increases by granting huge wage hikes via 6th pay commission and top it up by DA increase just before the poll announcements, they have no face to show us that we donot deserve the increase that we are demanding. and if there combined strength of banking doyens are not able to put it across to them, I dont know who should be..

At least our Language should be decent. Leaders sacrifice lot which only leaders can imagine. It is very difficult even to recover our lent money from the borrowers not to speak of getting huge money from Govt/IBA our of their profits. We even also do not like to spare few rupees for most genuine cause. So Negotiation is a tough task that too with Mighty Management backed by Govt. Do not loose heart 2nd Option of Pension will be achievement to be written in GOLDEN LETTERS in the History of Trade Unions and we hope to get appreciable wage increase.

UFBU has decided not to speak on 5th march meeting....It appears there is no unanimty of approach....or they do not know how to break the ice...
    Posted by: ashwani
UFBU leaders have betrayed bank employees. They have no courage to even give any statement in emergency like situation as elections have been declared. Whereas they have been reitrating time and again that election will not be a detterent in settlement. Why they have lied all the bank staff must seek clarification. Come on bankers let us unite and vote against UPA & Left as these two parties have patronised UFBU and not declaring pay commission for bankers. Had pay commission set up the revision would certainly be more than 100% so that bankers salary might be more than goverment employees as pay commission had considered the work pressure and conditions better.

arai Baba UFBU walo kuchh To Batao Kya stand liya 5/3/2009 kee meeting mein.
Posted by: THAKRAL
like in the past all sites of Officers Associations/Bank Unions they were displyaing information on the progress of talks on wage revision it is only 5/3/2009 meeting Bank officers/employees are desperately trying to know the outcome of UFBU Meeting on 5/3/2009. The Employees are very very keen and need latest information. UFBU/ABIOC/AIBEA should immediately display latest information and further course of action to achieve genuine demands of 2nd Option of Pension and Appreciable wage revision for bank Eemployees/Officers. Let us prepare rank and file to wage united forceful fight against IBA/GOVT for unnecessarily delaying MOST GENUINE DEMANDS OF BANKMEN
    Posted by: aksingh
why Govt & IBA alone. In fact it is so called bank's union leaders who are wolf in sheeps clothing are the main culprit for not presenting the bakers wage revision correctly. They must resign and apologise bankers for not making enough demand in charter importantly in the light of pay commission recommendation. They are responsible for present plight of bankers. Presently a bankers status is lower than a clerk in govt deptt

What happened yesterday in the meeting at Chennai? Does anyone have any idea?
    Posted by: Thakral
No IDEA. We all are waiting. UFBU/AIBEA/AIBOV should immediately tell the Bankmen about further course of action to achieve the Most Genuine demands of 2nd Option of Pension and Handsome Wage Revision. I hope UFBU Leaders are also reading these news papers/newspaper sites
    Posted by: Vijuy
Even the Union people are mum on Chennai meet of UFBU...It appears there is no concensus on the issues in UFBU....GOD Give them a BREAK....UFBU should be termed as "UNITY OF FALTU BANKERS UNION".....How many of you are willing to vote for a change in Leadership of All the Unions who are representing us....We must force Leadership to quit...freinds Please Launch QUIT LEADERSHIP MOVEMENT....We are better off without these Leaders....So please start a SMS Campaign immediately to remove the Leaders...

The SBI authorities should take up the issue of payment of pension @ of 50% of Basic pay last drawn by the employee concerned as on the date of VRS i.e., 31-03-2001 which has been denied to them. They should pay it as per the SBI employees pension scheme to employees/officers who took VRS. They were given the pension of 50% of their pre-revised scales though they were drawing at the material time of VRS the Basic pay as per the revised salaries. The VRS potties are still fighting for it and the SBI authorities have turned their request to deaf ears. It is a gross injustice to the employees who have considerably contributed for the growth of the organization

Now it is too late, elections are declared and now the govt do not hear our genuine demands they are just ignoring the hard working sincer bank employees. however all bank employees are united and even now we all must take strong step to get our salary revised immediately.
