| Belgian chemicals and pharmaceuticals group Solvay is all set to acquire the specialty polymers business of Mumbai-based Gharda Chemicals for an undisclosed amount.

| Gharda’s specialty polymers manufacture and R&D unit at Panoli in Gujarat has annual sales of over Rs 46 crore ($10 million) and employs 180 staff.

| “The acquisition will provide the Solvay Specialty Polymers strategic business unit with its first industrial base in India,” said Solvay in a media statement.

| The acquisition gives Solvay a range of specialty grades of ultra-high performance polymers, including polyether ketones, used for covering and insulating wires and cables.

| Solvay intends to develop the unit into a global centre for the development and production of specialty polymers and other innovative materials. It plans to integrate the Panoli unit with Solvay Advanced Polymers operating unit in Alpharetta, Georgia, US.

| The Panoli site houses well equipped R&D, quality assurance and application development centres with facilities for polymer characterisation, testing and evaluation of processibility, mechanical, thermal, chemical, hydrolytic, flame retardant and electrical properties, product and mold design to provide complete solution to customers.

| It also facilitates designing and delivering custom requirements for specific applications and well equipped synthesis laboratory supported by a applications development centre and a sophisticated testing facility.

| Gharda Chemicals has risen from a small unit in 1964 to be one of the most successful companies in the agrochemical industry. This has led to the production of vital import-substitute products and cost effective agrochemicals on a large scale.
