Cadila Pharma Files For Seventy Patents In The Us
/ BUSINESS STANDARD Sep 10, 2002, 00:00 IST

Cadila Pharmaceuticals Ltd has applied for 70 product patents in the United States.

The company has already received a patent of viable lacto bacilli and antibiotic combinations in Eurasia, US, United Kingdom and patent of Aripo in Sri Lanka and India.

A R Kurup, general manager of Cadila, said, “Our aim to get patent for all these 70 products will help us to grow more overseas.”

Industry sources said that once Cadila is granted the patents it has applied for, the company will give more emphasis on the export market, specially in the US and Latin America.

The Ahmedabad-based company has opened its own set-up through subsidiary at St Louis, Missouri, US, from where it operates in both the north and Latin American markets.

Cadila has also started the process for the preparation of a stable fixed dose pharmaceutical composition of anti-infective agent or agents and micro-organisms as active ingredients in India, USA, the UK, Sri Lanka, Russia and Kenya.

The process for manufacturing formulation of topical beta blockers with improved efficacy is going on in India.

“A process for manufacturing topical ophthalmic preparations without systemic effects is being carried out in South Africa while the process of manufacturing topical formulation of Nimesulide is being carried out in India,” said a senior Cadila official.

The Rs 550 crore group company has operations covering 43 countries. The company aims to have a turnover of Rs 1,000 crore by 2004.

Besides its US operations, Cadila has presence in Russia, Japan, Kenya and Nigeria.

“We have already achieved a respectable market share in the international markets and we are among the few corporates to have registered maximum number of products across the frontiers. Plans and strategies are in place to evolve the group into a true life sciences company by 2005,” Kurup said.

Cadila is also an integrated healthcare solutions provider comprising strategic business units on human branded formulations, generics and oncological products, animal health and natural products, biotech, bulk actives and international business.
