Riding the boom in low-cost mobile phones, Bengal’s handset manufacturers, such as GeePee Infotech and Simoco, plan to launch several multimedia and inexpensive phones over the next three months.
Kolkata-based Gee Pee Infotech will unveil colour handsets for Rs 500 in April. The city-based firm has scheduled the Calcutta launch of the phone for the Bengali New Year.
“We are targeting the rural population,” said Gee Pee managing director Bijay Agarwal. The company currently sells handsets priced between Rs 1,000 and Rs 6,000.
“All our handsets are assembled in China, while the research and development is ours,” added Agarwal. The company has recently started exporting to Nepal under its own brand name.
Simoco, another Kolkata-based manufacturer of mobile phones, will soon launch a handset that supports two GSM connections and one CDMA connection in the same handset. This will be priced at Rs 5,500 a piece.
Simoco currently sells 12 models priced between Rs 1,000 and Rs 6,000, of which nine models support dual GSM connections and one handset supports dual GSM and CDMA connections.
Sanjay Ghosh, managing director of Simoco, said: “We have received export orders from service providers like Vodafone to supply handsets. By March this year, we expect to sell 60,000-70,000 handsets per month.”
Simoco manufactures only two handsets in Kolkata while 10 others are assembled and imported from China.
Simoco has recently launched ‘Simbook’, a 3G (GSM)- and 3X (CDMA)-equipped notebook that weighs less than a kilogramme. The aim is to replace desktops with Simbook, which is priced between Rs 14,999 and Rs 21,999.
Simoco currently has more than 100 distributors and 60 service centres across the country.
Simoco has also launched ‘Trax’, an integrated vehicle and personal tracking command and control system, alarm, and different types of analog measurement functions that deliver a complete mobile asset management solution.
Trax allows real-time positioning and tracking of a single or multiple vehicles or individuals, and accurate displays of their locations on digital maps along with the routes travelled and detailed historical analysis.
