Self help groups (SHGs) and self-employment department of government of West Bengal is looking at scaling up the number of self help groups present in the state, in coordination with the panchayat and rural development authority of government of West Bengal within 2010.
On the sidelines of a corporate social responsibility(CSR) meet organised by Confederation of Indian Industries(CII), AS Biswas, principal secretary of self help group and self employment department of government of West Bengal said, "Our department is looking at increasing the number of self help groups present in the state. This will be done mainly by collaborating with the panchayat and rural development authority of the state government."
The government is looking at establishing about 10,000 such groups in the state within the next two years.
Currently there are around 8,50,000 self help groups operating in the state, up from 7,30,000 SHGs working last year.
There are about 8,50,000 SHGs presently working, out of which three lakh operate in rural areas and plans of increasing it to 3.5 lakh will also be looked at, added Biswas.
This will be done mainly by conducting campaigns across the state and enlisting various organisations and individuals who are interested in setting up several such self help groups since the concept of SHGs are becoming relevant by each passing day, further added Biswas.
The department will also concentrate upon its Bangla Swanirbhar Karmasansthan Prakalpa(BSKP) to generate self employment in the urban and rural areas through promotion of tiny scale units of production, manufacturing and trade.
An amount of Rs 65 crore has been allocated in the state budget for this year which can be divided into Rs 45 crore for generating self employment and Rs 20 crore for conducting campaigning, building infrastructure and for undertaking various training initiatives.
