The Election Commission today rolled out an unprecedented six-phase polling schedule for the upcoming assembly election of Bihar. Staring October 21, the polling will continue till November 20. The results will be declared on November 24. The 243-member assembly’s five-year term ends on November 27.
In November 2005, Bihar had witnessed a five-phase election. As almost 32 out of 43 districts are considered Naxal-affected, the Election Commission wants to have the elections under tight security arrangements.
With Monday’s announcement, the Model Code of Conduct has been enforced and the Centre and the state government will not be able to dole out sops for voters.
The dates for the six phases are: October 21, 24, 28 and November 1, 9 and 20.
Polling will take place in 56,943 polling stations spread across the state, which has 5,50,88,402 electors. Nearly 90 per cent have poll I-cards.
Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi, who will face his first assembly poll test after taking over the post, also announced today that the by-election for Banka Lok Sabha seat (vacant due to death of Digvijay Singh) will be held on November 1.
The election is expected to witness a three-cornered, contest with the Congress deciding to go alone and the RJD-LJP teaming against the ruling JD(U) and BJP combination.
While the JD(U)-BJP is yet to announce its poll pact, the RJD and LJP has announced their seat sharing formula, contesting 168 and 75 seats, respectively. The Congress plans to field candidates in all 243 seats.
