| Stating that increasing prices of essential commodities was worrying, the BJP today demanded a white paper on the country’s economy, keeping key economic indicators in mind.
| |
| BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said, “Though the government is boasting of keeping the inflation level at 4.5 per cent, it is the culmination of reduction of prices of some industrial products and does not show the full picture, which impacts the masses.”
| |
| He added the prices of daily consumption items have rises tremendously in the last one year.
| |
| “The price of aata, which was available at Rs 16 per kg, has seen a 40 per cent rise over its last year’s price of Rs 11 per kg. Pulses have also registered a steep rise of 35 per cent and are available at Rs 34 per kg while the prices of oil and gas have registered a 12 to 15 per cent rise in the last one year,” he said.
| |
| He added that the home loan interest rates, which were showing a downward trend in the last few years under the NDA regime, were now climbing. “The increase is a warning sign for the growing housing industry which is an employment multiplier,” he said.
| |
| More worrisome, he said, were are the recent results on core sector growth. “Last year, the growth was 6.4 per cent while this year, it has come down to 4.5 per cent. This will further worsen the power situation which will cripple the economy further,” he said.
| |
| He added the huge increase in the current account deficit from $ 1 billion in September 2004 to $ 13 billion in September 2005 was also a source of concern.
| |
| “We demand a white paper on all these issues, on how a healthy economy handed over to this government has seen such a negative growth,” said Javadekar. |
