Bold designs
Priyanka Joshi / Mumbai Oct 31, 2009, 00:30 IST

Designer Krishna Mehta can talk about software upgrades and gadgets just as effortlessly as fabrics and dyes. If you missed her collection at recent fashion weeks, you may now spot her teaching the finer details of the business at leading fashion institutes in Mumbai and Hyderabad, accompanied by her super-powered Apple MacBook Pro for presentations.

The workhorse

Having dumped the Rs 33,000 worth Nokia Communicator for a BlackBerry Bold, Mehta explains, “What’s the need to use a laptop when your mobile phone can email, show you pictures and remind you of appointments?” When she invested Rs 31,990 in her BlackBerry, Mehta was merely indulging her weakness for shiny new gadgets. Her iPhone has now been relegated to the position of a music player, says Mehta, also the founder member and director on the Board of the Fashion Design Council of India.

Sound design

Her good old iPod, meanwhile, sits comfortably on a pair of Bose speakers (priced upwards of Rs 20,000) for the best music experience. Mehta makes sure every gadget has the latest software upgrades. “It’s very easy to update firmware on Apple products — my iPod, iPhone, and MacBook have the most up-to-date software.”

Second screen

Even Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computers, would hardly have thought that BlackBerry phones could cloud the powerful Apple MacBook Pro. Yet, Mehta asserts that her laptop is no more the most important tool in her arsenal. “My MacBook is now predominantly used to store my pictures from fashion weeks and videos,” she lets in. With the exception of occasional office documents, cost sheets or when in the mood to watch a DVD, Mehta has fewer reasons to bring out her MacBook worth Rs 50,000.

Road trippin’

Her shopping list is expectedly long but this designer acknowledges her weakness for red Jaguars. “I love the traditional Jaguar styling cues such as a front wire grille, the sensuous styling, and the snarling engine,” she says. The luxury car comes with a hefty price tag of Rs 61 lakh, but that doesn’t bother Mehta. Her wish list extends to fast bikes. “Although I don’t know how to ride a bike, I don’t mind sitting with a cool biker on a super fast bike,” she chuckles.

Brand wiser

“I love the fabrics and styling of international designers such as Dries van Noten,” says Mehta. She finds Stella McCartney’s prêt lines striking and says Chanel gowns are all about “timeless beauty.”
