BS People: Aditya Vij
Fortis Healthcare's new CEO has his sights set high
Joe C Mathew / New Delhi Jul 06, 2011, 00:30 IST

Aditya VijAfter a two-year stint at infrastructure major Punj Lloyd, Aditya Vij has moved over to Fortis Healthcare, India’s second-largest private hospital chain, as its new CEO. Vij has replaced Bhavdeep Singh, who resigned from his post seven months ago for personal reasons.

Prior to joining Punj Lloyd, Aditya had a distinguished innings of 18 years with General Motors, across five countries in Europe and Asia. Some of his key positions at GM include general director (Opel Southeast Europe, Hungary); chairman & managing director, GM India; and regional executive director, Nordic, Benelux & Switzerland.

Among his significant achievements at GM were the turnaround of the India business into a profitable entity, the successful launch of the Chevrolet brand in India, the several-fold expansion of production capacity at the car manufacturing plants, the establishment of an engineering & R&D Centre for Global competitiveness and the setting up of a shared services centre for GM units worldwide.

At Punj Lloyd, Vij was responsible for setting up the defence and nuclear power verticals for the group.

His tenure at Fortis begins at a time when the healthcare major, with a decade of growth behind it, is planning to enter the next phase of expansion, which includes increased presence in smaller towns in the country.

Fortis, which commissioned its first hospital in 2001 at Mohali, near Chandigarh, has expanded its operations to become a network with an over 8,000-bed capacity across 56 hospitals across India.
