BSP to implement MES
R Krishna Das / Kolkata/ Raipur Nov 13, 2009, 00:17 IST

Industrial tool to optimise operations

Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) will implement the Manufacturing Execution System (MES), an industrial Information Technology (IT) tool for improvisation of production scheduling and optimisation of manufacturing operations.

With this, the flagship unit of the Navratna Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) and steel major Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) joins the elite club of integrated steel majors including POSCO of South Korea and ISPAT who have deployed MES.

The BSP inked contract with M/s Posdata of South Korea in the presence of company's Managing Director (MD) R Ramaraju to implement MES. The MD assured all possible assistance to the team while engineering the project. Aimed at integrating the manufacturing operations of Steel Melting Shop -2, Plate Mill and Rail and Structural Mill, MES would be implemented in three packages-- namely Core MES Software with yard management System, Support MES with Integration of ERP-SAP and procurement of PCs along with its peripherals.

The MES project is scheduled to be completed by June 2011. "It (the proposed implementation of the MES) is a significant milestone for SAIL-BSP, particularly after the successful deployment of Enterprise Resources Planning (ERP)," BSP spokesperson said.

MES is aimed at achieving quicker responsiveness to customer's ever-increasing demands, sustaining the business growth and connecting the 'Shop floor production information to the Boardroom/Management Business information' that are the needs of today's competitive business era, the spokesperson added.

Ranjana Muley, the Deputy General Manager (DGM) and Project Coordinator of the MES informed that the work on the implementation of the system would start immediately.

R Sreenivasan, DGM (SMS-II) will be the designated Project Manager.

To facilitate continuous monitoring and review of the project, various committees such as Apex Committee, Steering Committee and a Task force have been constituted.
