Buffett's success mantra: Enjoy your work
BS Reporter / Bangalore Mar 24, 2011, 00:28 IST

Warren Edward Buffett built an empire worth $50 billion over 35 years, and the world’s third richest man says it came by being passionate about his work.

“I have been enjoying what I have been doing for the past many years and not a single day has passed when I haven’t had fun. Enjoy your work and do it with passion. All the good things will follow,” the chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway told a packed hall of entrepreneurs under the aegis of CII in Bangalore this afternoon.

The Oracle of Omaha noted that the work was simple. “All I do is create a conducive environment for businesses to grow. I totally trust the people who run their businesses. I started on a blank canvas with an idea on how I wanted my corporation to be. All I tell entrepreneurs whom I work with is… ‘here’s another brush. Create your own painting,’” he said.

It may well be the shape of things to come for businesses in India who are eyeing to be part of the Berkshire Hathaway family. “I hope at some point, some large company looking for a permanent home, and decide to have a home, then don’t forget me,” the 80-year-old said speaking for nearly an hour peppered with humorous anecdotes.

Buffett has been stressing he is keen to invest in one of the large economies, and Wednesday’s discussions further established that he is planning a significant role in the growth story of India. “It’s a huge country on the move. Berkshire should participate here with businesses from across the world. India is a large economy and there will be significant investment opportunities. India is opening up by the day and the structure of industrial base is gathering force and bigger opportunities are coming our way,” he said.

During a breakfast meeting with bureaucrats and officials of Karnataka in the morning, Buffett said he was delighted to be at the tech hub of the country. “I came here with enough knowledge of the Indian economy and that has been reinforced. You are doing the right thing. I couldn’t feel more delighted to be here,” said the legendary investor.

He seemed to be impressed with India’s hospitality. “I was treated much better here in India than they do in the United States. This is my first trip to India and I am overwhelmed by the welcome,” he said.

He was given a short presentation on investment opportunities in Karnataka and the Global Investors meet held in 2010. "It is very impressive," he said, lauding the efforts of the Karnataka government in facilitating the establishment of a Nestle food processing plant in a short time frame of barely 10 months.
