Calcutta University ties up with Globsyn
Our Bureau / Kolkata July 20, 2005
University of Calcutta (CU) and Globsyn Business School (GBS) today launched an innovative ‘one year post graduate diploma in applied economics and information management (PGDAEIM) under its Industry Institute Partnership Programme (IIPP).

“This is the first time, CU is offering a ‘one’ year diploma programme of this nature. Due to infrastructure constraint, it is not possible to give students the practical exposure up to adequate desired level. PGDAEIM would provide exactly this platform to the students where they will have hands-on training as required by the industry,” said A K Banerjee, vice-chancellor (VC) of CU.

Students undergoing this course shall have an competitive edge in several segment including equity reassert, mutual fund, insurance, banking and financial institution, bioinformatics, agriculture research, Bikram Dasgupta, chairman and chief executive officer, Globsyn Technologies Ltd., said.

“There is urgent need for this type of ‘bridge institute’ that will train students before entering the industry. The flexibility associated with this type of programme is of immense importance to make it compatible with the industry requirement,” said Dasgupta.

The pioneering course is expected to begin this September with expected student intake in the tune of 30, informed Ishita Mukhopadhyay, coordinator-PGDAEIM, CU.

The fee for the course would be Rs 80,000 and it would be shared by CU and GBS.

“The classes will be held at GBS campus with faculties from CU and GBS. The course would also have ‘internship’ provision for practical experience in corporate environment. In addition, there would be placement support for the candidates,” she added.

The curriculum would cover information technology (IT), operation research, statistics, data gathering, data analysis and management, accounting and financial management amongst others.

Speaking on the occasion, Suranjan Das, pro-VC, academic, of CU, said, “This type of partnership should be beneficial to the larger society. Several industry-academia partnership has borne fruit to the industry with little return to the society and the under privileges. Our major objective would be to ensure social benefit through our IIPP.”
