| The Cane and Bamboo Technology Center (CBTC) of Guwahati has been selected by the German Technical Cooperation (GTC) for the implementation of the National Vocational Training System (NVTS) in the north eastern region.

| NVTS is a joint project of the GTC and the Ministry of Labour, Government of India. The CTBC which came up in 2000 as a UNDP and Department of Science and Technology, Government of India project is presently implementing the North East Regional Bamboo Mission (NERBAM) of North Eastern Council.

| Both the CBTC and GTC has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) under which the GTC/NVTS will support the CBTC in developing regional network in the north east India for effective use of bamboo to promote livelihood options and skills for men and women for sustainable employment and self employment.

| "This technical cooperation will address various issues regarding creation of job opportunities in the bamboo sector. In keeping with the vision of creating employment at doorstep, focus will be on development and implementation of demand and market oriented curricula. To ensure greater reach, a system of collaboration, linkages and networking with relevant stakeholders will be developed", sources from CBTC said.

| A recently concluded two day Operation Planning workshop, jointly organised by the CBTC and GTC, discussed modalities to arrive at sound operational plans based on consensus of the various stake holders to introduce bamboo technology courses in the various Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) of the north eastern region under the NVTS.

| This initiative is a fresh thrust to generate quality employment in different phases among the workers of the north east in the informal sector.

| The CBTC, based on its experience and expertise as the regional training Center on bamboo and cane, will conceive and introduce several demand based and employment relevant courses on bamboo skills in the ITIs and NGOs of the region.

| The CBTC, since 2000, has conducted vast numbers of training programmes and helped several entrepreneurs into setting up of bamboo processing units in the North East.

| The CBTC has also trained several batches of Entrepreneurs, NGOs, Policy Makers abroad and has helped in the technology transfers in the cane and bamboo sector in the north eastern region.

| The north eastern region houses about two thirds of the bamboo reserves of India with high concentration of species that are suitable for manufacturing different applications such as Bamboo Mat Corrugated Sheets, Bamboo Mat Boards, Bamboo Furniture, Bamboo Floor Boards, Bamboo Blinds etc. |
