Celebration in DMK headquarters; Guns fall silent in AIADMK HQ
Press Trust of India / Chennai May 16, 2009, 12:15 IST

With trends pointing to an impressive DMK victory in the Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu, celebrations broke out in party headquarters with jubilant cadres bursting crackers while the office of AIADMK wore a deserted look, reflecting moods in the rival camps.

The DMK office, Anna Arivalayam, in the arterial Anna Salai, wore a festive look with the party workers bursting crackers, distributing sweets and dancing to peppy numbers.

But the scene at DMK's ally Congress' headquarters Sathyamurthy Bhavan sported a sober look as most of its 16 candidates, including Union Ministers P Chidambaram, E V K S Elangovan and Manishankar Aiyar were trailing behind their AIADMK rivals. The party is leading in seven seats, according to latest trends.

The guns fell silent on the AIADMK front as it was leading only in nine constituencies despite a high-voltage campaign by its leader Jayalalithaa, who made the Sri Lankan Tamil issue a major plank. Its pro-LTTE allies MDMK and PMK too fared badly with firebrand leader Vaiko (MDMK) himself trailing in Virudhunagar.

Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's Madurai-based son M K Azhagiri, his grandnephew and former Union IT Minister Dayanidhi Maran, Union Ministers A Raja and S S Palanimanickam were among the party nominees who were leading.

IT IS VERY UNFORTUNATE TO NOTE THAT MOST OF THE TAMIL NADU VOTERS WENT BEHIND MONEY. DMK WON THIS ELECTION ONLY WITH MONEY POWER.THEY WOULD HAVE USED MUSLE POWER ALSO THANKS TO OUR ELECTION COMMISSION.
