The Chandigarh administration has proposed a ban on setting up of heavy, large and hazardous nature of industries in future, while laying thrust on developing micro, small and medium enterprises.
According to a draft Chandigarh Industrial Policy 2009, there will be a ban on setting up of hazardous, obnoxious as well as large and heavy industries. In general, only micro, medium and small industries would be permitted in the city.
"The goals set forth in the document (draft policy) are initiated to create a pollution free industry based on promotion avenues for micro, medium and small industries," the draft says.
The administration has also proposed promoting and encouraging hi-tech sophisticated, low volume value-added industries, less labour intensive, including food processing, electronics, IT, light engineering, bio technology, auto components, food processing, pharmaceutical, tourism and hand-loom sectors.
All out thrust on the IT industry would be laid so as to make Chandigarh one of the major IT centers in the world. The growth of this sector would be facilitated by providing necessary infrastructure support like software technology parks, IT institutes and other fiscal and non-fiscal incentives, the draft reveals.
