As many as 15 steel-making industries have come under scanner for defying pollution control norms in Chhattisgarh.
The Chhattisgarh Environment Conservation Board (BECB) has served notices to 15 steel making units urging them to explain reasons for violating the required pollution control norms. These units are located in the Urla, Siltara and Borjhara industrial areas at the outskirts of Raipur.
Sources said that during surprise check conducted by the Board officials, the units were found flouting necessary pollution control guidelines. These units were also not using the electro-static precipitator (ESP), an air pollution control device, during night hours.
“If the units failed to give satisfactory reply, the board would recommend the state power company to disconnect the power supply,” a senior board official said. The Official added that the action against the polluting units would continue. Chhattisgarh chief minister Raman Singh had recently taken a strong exception over the pollution problem and even quipped that the industrialists should start wearing white cloths as the soot on their clothes would make it clear how much pollution their firms were emanating.
