CII prescribes 'bold' moves for Bengal
BS Reporters / Kolkata Mar 11, 2009, 00:27 IST

West Bengal will have to bring about change with bold transformations that are not inhibited by present realities, according to West Bengal@2022, a vision document prepared by the CII West Bengal State Council on the lines of the chamber’s national initiative, India@75.

West Bengal@2022 summarised that the state was at the crossroad of being in a position to formulate, implement and evaluate the overall upliftment from its existing state to an envisioned one, by reflecting on the past, understanding and overcoming limitations, but more importantly bringing about change with bold transformations that were not inhibited by present realities.

CII envisages playing the role of a catalyst in this multi-faceted vision of the state and of the nation.

The visioning exercise included nine workshops with more than 300 people to take their views on West Bengal’s vision by the year 2022.

The workshops were held in Kolkata, Durgapur, Haldia, Kharagpur, Siliguri, Barasat and North 24 Parganas.

Spheres that have been identified for special attention include infrastructure and urbanization, agricultural development and policy frameworks, energy requirements and technologies, healthcare and related infrastructure, business augmentation initiatives and economic development, education proliferation and development, governance and public administration, environmental and ecosystem sustenance as well as sports, arts, heritage and cultural development activities.

Special emphasis has also been laid on upholding child rights as well as moral leadership.

Meanwhile CII today elected the new office bearers for 2009. Mukul Somany, joint managing director, Hindustan National Glass and Industries has been elected as the new chairman of CII Eastern Region while Kurush N Grant, divisional chief executive of ITC, has been elected as the deputy chairman.
