Rahul Dravid was not out at 60, and M S Dhoni was not out at 14 at the end of the day's play.
India has lost the wickets of Wasim Jaffer (31 runs), Virender Sehwag (11 runs), Sachin Tendulkar ( 4 runs) and Yuvraj Singh (15 runs).
Earlier in the day, England were bowled out for 300 runs with Anil Kumble finishing the innings with 5/76.
Anil Kumble finished the innings with 5-76, and became the first Indian and the fifth cricketer ever to claim 500 wickets in the the history of test cricket.
Kumble reached the milestone when he dismissed Stephen Harmison leg before.
The 35-year old karnataka leg spinner, playing in his 105th test, joined the list that includes Shane Warne (659), Muttiah Muralitharan (600), Glenn McGrath (542) and Courtney Walsh (519).
