Civic beauty
BSM Team / Mumbai Sep 12, 2009, 00:04 IST

I am an NRI based in Nigeria, where I own a Hyundai Elantra. I am planning to buy a vehicle in Kochi. I am in the market for a car priced between Rs 11 and 14 lakh and am interested in the Honda Civic. I am not in a hurry for the vehicle. So do you think it would be wise to wait for the new Mitsubishi Lancer which, I have heard, is expected to be released in 2010? Which car would you recommend?

N S Arjun, via email

The Civic is a bigger car than the Lancer and is a great buy for your budget. It is overall an excellent car that’s fun to drive, thanks to that fantastic 1800cc motor. The new Lancer will be slightly smaller by comparison and will have less legroom at the rear too. Honda has just given the Civic a facelift, so you don’t have to wait for anything.

Feeling used

I am looking for a sedan but I can afford only a maximum of around Rs 5.5 lakh for it. Fuel efficiency is not a factor, but I need looks and driving comfort. Is it better that I look out for a second-hand Ford Fiesta or should I go for any other brand new car? And is it possible to get a used Honda City in good condition? If I decide on a brand new car, which one do you suggest.?

Johnny Panikulam, Kochi

You should be able to snag a good condition 2005-06 Honda City ZX. It’s easy to drive, the controls are light, it’s quite comfy, has decent ride quality and you will generally find it quite hassle-free to drive. If you want a bit more performance, look out for a City ZX VTEC within your budget — but you should really search for one in the second-hand mart. As regards a new car, the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire VXi is a good sedan for the money you’re willing to spend.

Cost crunching

I would like to buy a hatchback which 1) is less than Rs 4 lakh (final price) 2) offers the best mileage 3) gives me the lowest per kilometre running costs. Which car will suit my requirements?

Rejaneesh SR, via email

You have three good choices when it comes to a sub-Rs 4 lakh car which offers low running costs — the Chevrolet Spark LPG, the Hyundai Santro LPG and the Wagon R Duo LPG. Though CNG cars offer lower running costs, for personal use, LPG is better. LPG cars are peppier than CNG, while they are quick to tank up also. These three cars come with factory-fitted LPG kits with full manufacturer warranty, so they are safe bets. All the three models are good, proven cars, so go for the one which takes your fancy.
