| The civil aviation industry has achieved the biggest ever growth in aircraft movement and passenger traffic in the last financial year. Passenger traffic in the domestic airports increased by 22.3 per cent to 59.54 million, while aircraft movement increased by 14.2 per cent to 7.3 lakh.

| A buoyant sector has projected a passenger traffic of 90-100 million by 2010, with 59 million domestic and 35 million international passengers. Cargo handling is also expected to increase to 3.36 million tonne from the current level of 1.29 million tonne.

| During the year under review, both domestic and international aircraft movement showed a double-digit growth. Domestic aircraft movement increased by 13 per cent to 5.71 lakh and international aircraft movement increased by 19 per cent to 1.59 lakh.

| Meanwhile, international passenger traffic went up by 17 per cent to 19.45 million and domestic passenger traffic increased 25 per cent to 40.1 million.

| Total cargo traffic during the last financial year increased 20.8 per cent. International cargo traffic went up by 19 per cent to 8.25 lakh tonne and domestic cargo traffic by 24 per cent to 4.65 lakh tonne.

| Jet Airways tops the list of domestic and national carrier operators with 8,168 flights operating till June 2005. Indian Airlines ranks second with 7,562 flights, followed by Sahara (3,225 flights), Air Deccan (2,889 flights), Spice Jet (483 flights) and Kingfisher Airlines (267 flights).

| The data provided by the Press Information Bureau in Mumbai revealed that six domestic operators were proposing to acquire 269 new carriers.

| Air-India plans to add 68 new carriers to its fleet, Air Deccan 60, Kingfisher 48, Indian Airlines 43, Jet Airways 30 and Spice Jet 20. In 2005, Indigo, Go Air and Paramount will launch 120 carriers with Indigo accounting for 100 carriers. In 2006, Magic Air also plans to acquire 10 aircraft.
