Compass pegs East India's PC shipment share at 22%
BS Reporter / Kolkata Mar 10, 2010, 00:47 IST

Computer Association of Eastern India (Compass), an association of 270 information technology (IT) entrepreneurs of Eastern India, expects personal computer (PC) shipment's share of East India to remain at 22 per cent for 2009-10.

At a press conference in Kolkata, Alok Garodia, president of Compass, said, “Around 58 lakh Pcs have already been sold as of December 2009 at the national level. We expect East India’s share to remain at 22 per cent of the total PC shipment. Nationally, last year, PC shipment saw a dip of 7 per cent due to recessionary pressures.”

In 2007-08, East India’s market share in overall PC shipment was 17 per cent.

Compass is organising one of the largest annual IT exhibition in this month for four days. For the first time, there would be a live webcast of Compass and the organisers expect around 1.2 lakh visitors over four-days. Webcast would also enable access to 'virtual visitors’ across the globe.

They would be able to log on to visit the 20 pavilions and 100 stalls offering various IT products, services, solutions and special discounts from all the leading international and local brands.

“Even during the current recessionary phase there has been a very strong support from the local IT business and trade in terms of support and sponsorships for the IT show. This is an indication of the maturing of the regional trade and business,” said Pawan Jajodia, chairman - exhibition committee, Compass 2010.

Compass members account for nearly 80 per cent of the organised IT business in East India and the association has become a rallying point for addressing various national-level issues pertaining to the IT trade and industry.
