New Delhi, Oct 19 (PTI) Nearly a month after Competition Commission of India started functioning, the government today set up an appellate body CAT to hear appeals against the watchdog's orders.
The Competition Appellate Tribunal would be headed by Justice Arijit Pasayat.
"The Tribunal is expected to act as an independent forum which exercises oversight over the regulator's decisions," Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan said inaugurating the tribunal.
While the CCI came into existence in 2003, it had, till September this year, only been performing an advisory role in so far as spreading awareness about the legislation among industry and the public.
With CAT coming into existence of CAT, cases pending before the Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Commission would be transferred to the newly formed body.
However, Disputes relating to disparaging advertisements will not be heard by CAT. Instead, it would be transferred to the national Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission.
