Concor to develop rail infrastructure at Krishnapatnam Port
Press Trust of India / New Delhi Jul 05, 2011, 15:01 IST

State-run inland transport services provider Container Corporation of India (Concor) today tied up with Krishnapatnam Port company for developing rail infrastructure at the port terminal, which is slated to start operations in a month's time.

However, both the companies did not divulge the financial details of the agreement, which is likely to be finalised in a month's time.

"Krishnapatnam Port and Concor will jointly develop the required rail infrastructure to cater to the growing container movement after the container terminal at Krishnapatnam Port goes operational in a month," Krishnapatnam Port CEO Anil Kumar told reporters here.

The port will provide adequate facilities and infrastructure for storage and operation of railway rakes and containers at its premises.

The companies may also develop container freight station (CFS) at the port and inland container depots (ICD).

"Over a period of six months, we will see whether there is need for CFS. Though we have identified the land, but when will we build the terminal, we will decide," Concor Managing Director Anil Gupta said.

Concor, which is sitting on cash reserves of over Rs 2,000 crore, is looking at expanding its operations in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

"We have talked to Bangladesh for providing rail connectivity from Kolkata to Dhaka and we are also ready to build a terminal there, if they permit," Gupta said.

Concor has been in talks with Bangladesh over this proposal for the past 3-4 years, but nothing has been finalised yet.

"We have been talking to the Bangladesh authorities over this for 3-4 years. But we are yet to get a green signal from them," he added.

Meanwhile, the company is also following up a proposal with Sri Lanka to start rail services from Colombo to Trincomalee and is awaiting a response from the Sri Lankan port authorities.
