Congress complains to EC against booklet
Press Trust of India / Allahabad Feb 15, 2012, 15:55 IST

Local unit of the Congress has lodged a complaint with the Election Commission over distribution of a 16-page booklet allegedly containing objectionable remarks against the Nehru-Gandhi family a day ahead of polling in all the 12 Assembly seats falling in the district.

"The incident came to our notice last night following which we obtained a copy of the booklet. We were shocked to find the highly objectionable and defamatory nature of its content which was clearly targeting the Nehru-Gandhi family", the party's election coordinator for Allahabad Abhaya Awasthi told PTI.

He said, "we took up the matter with the district administration, which, however, evinced no interest in taking cognisance of the matter. Since it is polling day today, we decided against resorting to agitation over the matter though we have sent our complaint to the Chief Election Commissioner and the Chief Electoral Officer of Uttar Pradesh".

"The libelous booklet bears the name of Delhi-based Sanskriti Rakshak Sangh as its publisher. It appears to be a handiwork of detractors of the Congress who may be followers of a pro-Hindutva ideology", Awasthi added.

Meanwhile, brisk voting was taking place across the district where 33.3 per cent voters had exercised their franchise till 1 pm.
