V Kishore Chandra S Deo — the five-term Congress MP from Andhra Pradesh — is likely to become Speaker of the Lok Sabha, after two other contenders — Sushilkumar Shinde and M Veerappa Moily — got Cabinet berths in the new Manmohan Singh government.
While Deo refused to comment on this speculation as he had not got any formal communication from his party till Sunday evening, most top Congress leaders feel that party president Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh may opt for Deo to handle the top post in the Lok Sabha.
Outgoing Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, too, wants Deo to succeed him. “Chatterjee has even told Deo and other Congress leaders that he should be his successor,” a source close to Chatterjee told Business Standard.
The new Speaker is likely to be elected by June 4. Meanwhile, Manikrao Gavit, Congress veteran in the Lok Sabha, may act as the pro tem Speaker in the first session of the 15th Lok Sabha that starts June 1.
Deo’s personality is considered by many as an advantage for the Speaker’s post. He is also popular among other party leaders. As Deo has also handled the Privileges Committee of the 14th Lok Sabha, Lok Sabha officers point out he has a good command over the rules of the House and disputes.
