DHL looks at major airports for expansion
BS Reporter / Chennai/ Bangalore Nov 21, 2008, 00:22 IST

After setting up an integrated air side facility at Bengaluru International Airport (BIAL), DHL India, the logistics solutions provider is looking at setting up similar integrated terminals in other cities including Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata.

The company’s intergrated terminal in BIAL has been set up on area of 2,20,757 square feet with a capacity to handle 18,000 tonnes per annum. An investment of US $ 25 million (Rs 125 crore) has been made into the terminal.

Malcolm Monteiro, senior vice president and area director, South Asia, DHL Express said that Hyderabad would be the next location for the terminal followed by other cities. The facility would enable DHL to have a faster clearance of in-bound and out-bound international and domestic shipments through its own maintenance, ground handling, airside and cityside operation capabilities.

Moteiro said that Blue Dart will invest about Rs 1,000 crore in the next five years through internal accruals to expand its services across the country. DHL Express has an 81.3 per cent stake in Blue Dart.

While admitting that the overall slowdown in industry has led to a drop in margins, Monteiro said that no adverse steps would be taken by the company.

“There is a slowdown in growth, but growth is happening in India. There will be no reduction in our workforce in the country, “ he added. The company has a headcount of 10,000 people in India.
