| DMRC issues show cause to contractor, blacklists design conslt |

Issuing a show cause notice to the contractor asking to explain why it cannot be blacklisted for two years, blacklisting a design consultant, suspending two senior engineers and slapping a notice on the Chief designer are some of the actions taken by DMRC in the wake of the recent mishap at a site that killed six people.
Cracking the whip three weeks after the Zamrudpur incident that killed six people and cast doubts over the safety of the modern transport system, the DMRC issued a "major penalty charge sheet" against its Chief Engineer (Design) Rajan Kataria, who approved the design of the cantilever pier that led to the mishap.
The DMRC placed under suspension Deputy Chief Engineer (Design) V P Srivastava and Deputy Chief Engineer Mukesh Thakur (in-charge of site supervision).
DMRC Managing Director E Sreedharan said the actions were taken based on the report submitted by Prof A K Nagpal committee that went into the exact causes of the mishap.
"C Mallonga, the expatriate consultant of General Consultants who had direct responsibility for ensuring quality of works is being immediately de-mobilised," Sreedharan said.
The contractor Gammon India will be issued a show cause notice as to why it should not be blacklisted for two years and the contractor will get 21 days to respond after the issue of the notice, Sreedharan said.
If blacklisted, Gammon will not be able to participate in any of the future contracts but will be allowed to complete the existing projects.
