BS Reporter / Mumbai/ Ahmedabad Feb 04, 2009, 00:54 IST

“This is part of our vision to apply innovative solutions to solve critical problems relating to quality of education and access to education for all. There is a shortage of over 2 lakh schools in the country especially in small towns and rural areas. Most of the Tier 3 cities do not have access to schools that offer high quality, standardised education available to children in major metros and large towns and we hope to fill this gap”, said Shantanu Prakash, chief executive officer and managing director of Educomp Solutions Ltd.

“We expect to set up five Vidya Prabhat Schools by July 2009. In the next 2-3 years, we hope to establish 100 schools through this model across India,” he added.

The first five Vidya Prabhat schools will come up at various locations in north India including Bazpur, Kashipur, Bahl Parav and Gadarpur in Uttrakhand. These schools will be open for admission for academic year 2009. The average monthly fee would be in range of Rs. 700 per student.

“Our schools would be unique in many aspects. They would operate on a shift system, wherein primary classes would be held in the morning shift and senior classes in the afternoon shift allowing for optimum use of infrastructure,”said M S Uma Mahesvaram, head of the project.
