| Around Rs 8,000 crore will be invested for setting up associated evacuation transmission schemes for the evacuation of power from the Sasan and Mundra ultra mega power projects, both 4,000 Mw each.

| “The power ministry has been asked to provide long-term open access and the details of the scheme will be finalised within five months. Construction of these schemes will involve an investment of around Rs 4,000 crore each,” a power ministry official told Business Standard. The developer of these schemes will be selected through competitive bidding.

| Allocations have already been decided for the 4,000 Mw ultra-mega power projects at Tadri (Karnataka), Sasan (Madhya Pradesh), Mundra (Gujarat) and Girye (Maharashtra).

| Out of the total demand of 27,400 Mw made by 13 states, the power ministry had firmed up allocations for 16,000 Mw.

| Maharashtra has received the maximum allocation of 3,800 Mw. While Rajasthan and Gujarat have been allocated 1,600 Mw of power each, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala have been allocated 500 Mw, 800 Mw, 100 Mw, 1,100 Mw, 850 Mw, 1,700 Mw, 750 Mw, 2,000 Mw, 1,000 Mw and 200 Mw respectively.

| The power ministry also plans to increase the existing inter-regional power transfer capacity of around 9,500 Mw to 30,000 Mw by 2012 through the creation of “transmission super highways”.

| For creating such a grid, an investment of Rs 71,000 crore is planned. Out of this, Rs 50,000 crore is expected to be mobilised by Power Grid and the remaining Rs 21,000 crore through private sector participation. |
