No clear winner emerges in a comparison between the Nokia N96 and Apple iPhone 3G. If N96 fails in terms of an impressive interface, the iPhone stumbles on security and storage. The two phones compete ferociously on a host of applications available or bundled.
Looks and Interface: Right away, it’s the iPhone. Nokia N96, though a smart slider phone, shows off none of its power stashed away beneath its boring ‘black’ looks. There’s scarcely any design innovation on Nokia’s part.
Multimedia and Applications: Nokia N96 screen (diagonally) is 2.8 inches; the iPhone’s is a comfortable 3.5. Being a video-oriented phone, the N96 adds support for more video formats, including H.264, Flash video, ensuring you can watch YouTube clips on the phone, and Windows Media Video version 9. The N96 includes dedicated DSPs and video acceleration chips.
On the iPhone, the picture quality seems good too and one can watch in either vertical or horizontal mode.
The iPhone has a 2 megapixel built-in camera, but it takes adequate photos in daylight. Compared with N96’s 5 megapixels camera (with flash support) it seems inadequate. Nokia has included three great games to begin with, but the iPhone offers more variety in games.
Nokia has taken a lot of pains to make the GPS simpler and detailed, even adding a pedestrian mode. Apple’s newly-added assisted GPS offers pinpoint locations with the help of Google maps, but is nowhere close to Nokia’s accuracy.
Internet and Mail: BlackBerry users are most likely going to be put off by the email options on the iPhone, as there is no push option with consumer email. Mail can be configured to ‘fetch’ (iPhone term) mail every 15 minutes, 30 minutes, hourly, or manually. N96’s symbian OS is a familiar one, with web security and remote lock features weaved in.
Storage: Nokia N96 packs in attention-grabbing features like inclusion of DVB-H digital TV (available in select cities and locations at present) and strikingly high specifications. It comes with 16 GB of onboard and 8 GB of replaceable flash storage, and has a pronounced focus on video and music.
Even the form factor and bundled kick-stand suggest this model is a TV-phone, let alone the numerous hardware specifications like the STMicroelectronics chipset that make it video-relevant.
Battery life: Nokia has invested a lot in making the battery life longer and one can happily dismiss the fear that the low-capacity battery used in Nokia N96 (950 mAh) won’t be enough for comfortable operation. N96 averages a solid 6 hours while iPhone battery fizzled out in about 5 hours.
Price: The Nokia N96 (16 GB) is now available for 34,999 while Apple iPhone (16 GB) retails at Rs 36,100 and the 8GB iPhone for Rs 31,000 with Airtel and Vodafone. Nokia’s phone is operator independent.
.....well, cannot undestand this article... iPhone is miles ahead N96... without telling all the techs again, just have a look at the AppStore, and tell me if you can find something similar to this for N96.... NO!
Well, for me, it's important that in few seconds I can not only install Facebook for iPhone or the TomTom , but also my other preferred apps, like EasyTrails or many others, where you can also suggest new improvements or features to the support team, and they many times are happy to help you...
for me, there is no comparison possible...

i think iphone is way better. coz my phone is n96 right now which is crappy. n96 hangs all the time especially when u watching movies. the problem with iphone is bluetooth i mean u cannot use the bluetooth to nokia or ericsson or something. if u guys going to buy a phone i will advice n95 8gb. or if u can w8 for n97.
According to this reviewers notes the Nokia wins hands down so he should admit it. Do a points score and you will see. A 5mega pixel Cam, Video recorder equal to a camcorder in quality! It has a photo flash capability. Bigger memory. Better security, superior GPS. This is a one horse race. Only if you want a pretty phone with a mp3 player go for an Iphone. If you want capability go for the N96. The Iphone can't even compete with the N95 let alone stand next to the N96. This reviewer missed out on a lot of details. My old N95 even has a bar code reader so if I am shopping and there is no price I can double check with my phone. I even have a very good camera lense zoom on my phone. Need I say more? Better internet and capability email functionality, better storage!

you remind me of a lad i work with, his basic principle is 'if he aint got it then it aint worth having' he has the n96 and found out i got and iphone 3g...straight out he was out with awww what ya get that for its crap n96 better etc.
if your goin for cameras n recorders etc maybe it is better but look for sony ericsson if thats your bag, but personally phones are about much more than that nowadays and thats where the iphone has profitted...a regular stream of applications which are updated on a regular basis, theres an app for ne1 and that is obviously missed this review.
n96 is a boring old slide phone, nothing innovative about that, if style is thing, hook up with the iphone...hell my old k750i looks better than the n96.
moral...alot of ppl get bitter because their stuck in a 12 month contract with a phone thats far inferior to a better model, like your case and thats why you'll defend it till the hilt...or until your due your next upgrade.
i have a n96 ordered.
And have read many articles about bad battery life in n96. We shall see. I see you can replace the shipped battery and replace it with a BL-6F (1250 mAh) - if your willing to mind a slight bump at the back of the phone.
Course it all depends on where you are in the world.
Im in republic of Ireland and we have good 3g access. for about 55 euro a month i can get 1GB of data downloaded and 800 texts with 100 talk time mins. Which I think is very good.
matt.
