Karnataka government today said though the Centre has allotted 1.76 lakh tonnes of urea to the state during this month, it has received only 54,320 tons and attributed the delay in supplies to rains and disruption in rail network.
Difficulties had been encountered in loading fertiliser consignment released by IFFCO to railway wagons and lorries in the wake of torrential rains at Mangalore port, minister for agriculture S A Ravindranath said replying to debate in the assembly on shortage of chemical fertiliser stock faced by farmers, raised by opposition Congress and JD(S). Besides there is disruption in transporting the stocks through railways as rail rakes remain stranded at Jolarpet, Gutti and Lona to non-availability of platforms, he said. The demand for fertiliser has shot up during this kharif season as 40.96 lakh hectares of land has come under sowing till July 18, which is 75 per cent higher than the last year, Ravindranath said.
Barring urea, the state had availability of other chemical fertiliser, he said adding during the Kharif season from April to June 2.55 lakh tonnes of DAP, 1.28 lakh tons of MOP, 2.42 lakh tons of Complex and 2.04 lakh tons of urea has been made available to farmers. The state has requested the Centre to supply additional 50,000 tonness of urea, DAP, MOP and Complex fertiliser to meet the growing demand, he said.
