A fire broke out at Reliance Petroleum's under-construction refinery at Jamnagar in Gujarat. The part of the refinery complex where waste material is stored caught fire but the company said there was no loss of life and project work has not been affected.
“There has been a fire in the project construction infrastructure area of the upcoming RPL refinery, where waste material was stored. The fire has been extinguished and there are no injuries or casualties. The project activities of the Reliance Petroleum refinery and the operations at the Reliance refinery complex are continuing normally,” said a Reliance Industries spokesperson. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
Reliance Petroleum, a subsidiary of Mukesh Ambani-promoted Reliance Industries, is likely to start producing fuel from the 27 million tonne per annum export-oriented refinery later this month.
The complete refinery is likely to be commissioned by April 2009, said a company official. Trial runs at the refinery are already under way.
