The Himachal Pradesh government is in the process of awarding helicopter-taxi service contract to one of the five private companies that have bid for the job, official sources said.
Those who have applied include Pawan Hans Corporation, Aerosource, Testrel Aviation, Global Vectra and Surya Pharmaceutical.
The state Cabinet cleared the ambitious project late last year but there have been several delays since then.
The technical committee is now in the process of evaluating the bids.
The service is expected to start by the end of this year, official sources said.
In the near absence of air service in the hill state, the state government wants to start heli-taxi service to connect the lesser-known places in the state and attract high-class tourists to these places.
Most tourists are not able to make it to these remote-but-scenic places as it is time consuming and exhausting to travel by the rough mountain roads. So travelling by air would save a lot of time.
The state tourism department is finalising the air routes, particularly in the remote and high mountain regions of Lahaul, Spiti, Kinnaur and other such places which few tourists are able to visit.
There are 57 heli-pads across the state and the heli-taxi service intends to use them.
