Fund managers fully invested

It was another good week for Smart Portfolios fund managers, as they outperformed the benchmark BSE 200 index by a wide margin. The benchmark's networth rose nearly 2 per cent to Rs 10.72 lakh for the week ended July 31, 2009, when compared with Rs 10.52 lakh in the preceding week. On the other hand, the four fund managers saw their individual portfolio value appreciate in the range of 3-7 per cent, each.

The broader markets registered gains for the third consecutive week backed by steady flows from the institutional investors, global markets rally and renewed optimism of a global economic recovery.

The Smart Portfolios virtual portfolio returns now stand at 7.16 per cent from its initial corpus of Rs 10 lakh on September 1, 2008. Amar Ambani’s networth zoomed over 62.47 per cent to Rs 16.25 lakh, Anand Agarwal’s portfolio value has soared 70.83 per cent to Rs 17.08 lakh, Kashyap Pujara’s networth appreciated up by 33.45 per cent to Rs 13.35 lakh and Sadanand Shetty’s portfolio value has surged 50.84 per cent to Rs 15.08 lakh. In the week under review, the fund managers were once again on a shopping spree. Barring Kashyap Pujara, they bought shares worth Rs 9.10 lakh. It may be recalled that in the previous week as well they cumulatively bought shares worth nearly Rs 5 lakh. Each of the fund managers cash levels now are in the range of 0 to 18 per cent of their respective networth.

Anand Agarwal's portfolio value has zoomed nearly 71 per cent to Rs 17.08 lakh. Agarwal too was in buy mode, and picked shares worth at Rs 3 lakh at net level. His gross purchases totalled Rs 6.74 lakh, while gross sales stood at Rs 3.73 lakh. Agarwal continues to hold Rs 3.05 lakh in cash.

He has 22 stocks of which just one is below his cost price. His best performing stocks are MRF and Navin Flourine, each up nearly 25 per cent, respectively. Agarwal's other top performing stocks are Gujarat Flourochemicals, TCS and Colgate.

Sadanand Shetty's portfolio value appreciated 6.72 per cent last week, and is now up nearly 51 per cent at Rs 15.08 lakh as of date. Shetty had more or less balanced trades on both sides, with net purchases of stocks worth Rs 87,400. His gross purchases totalled Rs 5.18 lakh, while gross sales stood at Rs 4.30 lakh.

He has 20 stocks in his portfolio, of which just one - Reliance down nearly 13 per cent from his cost price is a under performer. His top picks are Taj GVK Hotel and Larsen & Toubro - up 29 and 28 per cent, respectively. Other best performing stocks are JSW Steel, DLF, SBI and Exide. Shetty’s total investments have crossed the 90 per cent-mark, with balance cash of just Rs 1.30 lakh.

Kashyap Pujara's networth appreciated by over 3 per cent to Rs 13.35 lakh, and is now up around 33 per cent since the inception of Smart Portfolios. In the week, under review Pujara did not execute any trades. He has invested over 85 per cent of his funds, with over 69 per cent capital concentrated in the top five picks.

He has nine stocks in his portfolio. His best pick is Century Textiles which has zoomed over 72 per cent from his cost price. Balrampur Chini, Aditya Birla Nuvo and Madras Cements are up 25-30 per cent each. However, Reliance Communications and Shipping Corporation are a drag in his portfolio.

Amar Ambani is fully invested in the markets with just Rs 4,000 as cash in hand. Last week, his gross purchases totalled Rs 8.99 lakh, with net purchases at Rs 5.22 lakh. Ambani's networth now stands at a whopping Rs 16.25 lakh, with net returns of 64.47 per cent.

He has 26 stocks in his portfolio, of which just five are below his cost price - the chief laggard is Glenmark Pharma down over 8 per cent from his purchase price. The best performing stocks in Ambani's portfolio are Gujarat State Petronet, up nearly 29 per cent. Falcon Tyres, Maruti and Apollo Tyres are up 22-25 per cent each.
