| GACL to expand hydrogen peroxide, caustic soda capacity |

Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Ltd (GACL), India’s largest caustic soda manufacturer, is all set expand its hydrogen peroxide and caustic soda manufacturing capacity. The state-run company is also setting up a stable bleaching powder unit at Dahej in Gujarat.
As part of its total expansion projects involving an investment of Rs 2,600 crore, GACL today announced three new projects, which include hydrogen peroxide phase-III, caustic soda expansion and stable bleaching powder unit.
“The company intends to pump in nearly Rs. 100 crore for third phase expansion of hydrogen peroxide manufacturing capacity at its existing facility in Dahej. Post expansion, the production capacity of the company will reach up to 39,000 tonnes per annum (TPA),” Guruprasad Mohapatra, managing director, GACL said after the foundation stone laying ceremony at Dahej. Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi today laid the foundation stone of these three projects.
Around Rs. 40 crore will be infused for raising its caustic soda production capacity to 1,250 metric tonnes per day (TPD). The company enjoys 18 per cent market share in caustic soda, 48 per cent in caustic potash, 22 per cent in chloromethane and 33 per cent in hydrogen peroxide.
“For stable bleaching powder, the company will invest close to Rs. 15 crore. All these three projects will be operational by 2011,” he added.
Overall, GACL has planned several new projects and expansion of its capacity at an estimated cost of Rs. 2,600 crore. These projects also include, 900 TPD caustic soda expansion, additional 150 Mw captive power plant, 84 TPD hydrogen peroxide, 450 TPD polyol and 24 TPD hydrazine project. “The company expects to commission these projects 2012,” Mahapatra revealed.
It may be mentioned here that GACL has stepped up its drive for expansion. The company has also formed a 50:50 joint venture with Dow Europe GmbH to set up 2,00,000 TPA chloromethane plant at Dahej.
Apart from this, it has also teamed up with other state-run companies like GNFC and GSFC for a mammoth project for synthetic rubber, EDC/PVC and phenol polycarbonate. The project involves an investment of Rs. 10,000 crore.
