The army has allowed the Maidan here to be used as a transit camps for Ganga Sagar pilgrims for the last time, a defence release said on January 2.
The release said "civil agencies would have to ensure that pollution and environmental damages do not take place."
The Centre, meanwhile, has granted permission for transit camps at Outram Ghat here from January 6 to 18 for pilgrims bound for the Ganga Sagar Mela at Sagar Island in South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal Congress leader Sudip Bandyopadhay said quoting a Ministry of Defence letter.
Bandhopadhay said he had spoken to Defence minister A K Antony twice and requested him to ensure that permission was granted for setting up transit camps at Outram ghat for pilgrims who came from different parts of the country for a holy dip.
