The Gangavaram port has set a target of handling 15 million tonne cargo during this fiscal. The port has already tied up with Visakhapatnam Steel Plant in this regard and is in talks with other companies for cargos like iron ore, sugar, coking coal, thermal coal, and project cargo, port sources told Business Standard.
The port completed the construction of five berths and other works with an investment of about Rs 2,000 crore by December 2008 and started cargo handling operations on a trail basis from January 2009. During the three months of operation from January to March 2009, it handled about 2.5 million tonne, of which most of the cargo included coking coal and thermal coal for Vizag Steel Plant and other steel companies.
This year, the port is expecting 5-7 million tonne of coking coal and 3-4 million tonne of thermal coal. “Several projects are coming in and around the area hence we are anticipating good number of project cargos in this fiscal. Iron ore has also started coming to the Gangavaram port,” the sources said.
