Garment exports fall by 15% in Apr-Jun
Press Trust of India / New Delhi Aug 04, 2009, 18:19 IST

India's garments exports dipped by 15.4 per cent to $2.41 billion in the first quarter of this fiscal due to a waning demand in major markets such as the US and EU.

The country had exported apparels worth $2.85 billion in the same period of last year, according to the data by the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC).

In June, garment exports fell by 10.15 per cent to $870 million.

The downturn was pronounced in silk garments exports, which plunged by 29.31 per cent to $82 million in the June quarter, AEPC Chairman Rakesh Vaid said.

Exports of cotton garments fell by 14.13 per cent to $1.86 billion while woolen garments shipments dipped by 7 per cent to $93 million in the first quarter of 2009-10.

The overseas shipments of apparel made from other textiles declined by 5.5 per cent to $189 million in April to June this year.

The garments exports in 2008-09 grew by 4 per cent to $10.17 billion.
