Gartner report robust on local PC market
BS Reporter / Mumbai March 21, 2007
India PC shipments are expected to grow by 20 per cent this year. Worldwide PC shipments too, according to Gartner, are forecasted to total 255.7 million units this year — a 10.5 per cent increase from 2006. The PC revenue is projected to reach $213.7 billion, a 4.6 per cent increase.

Diptarup Chakraborti, Principal Analyst, Gartner India, said, “The growth drivers for the Indian market will be the consumer and the SME segment, which will be pushed more by laptop growth than desktops. With greater focus on e-governance in the last budget, government spending is expected to propel the market further north.”

Gartner analysts also said PC shipments will enjoy at best a limited boost from the release of Microsoft’s new operating system (OS), Vista.Mikako Kitagawa, Principal Analyst for Gartner Dataquest’s Client Computing Markets Group said, “While Vista includes a number of interesting features, these features just don’t have enough ‘must have’ appeal with the average home and SMB user to spark a significant rush of new PC sales.”

Vista adoption among large business is expected to lag behind consumers and SMBs. With large businesses, the issue is not so much a lack of must-have features as it is about the compatibility of the new OS with established applications before it is widely deployed.
