General Electric (GE) India looking at expanding its manufacturing in the country to remain competitive.
“We do not have a large manufacturing footprint in India. We really need to do that to be more competitive here in the long term,” said General Electric president and CEO John Flannery.
Speaking to reporters after receiving the IACC-Sanmar Indo-US Business Cooperation Award, he said the company needed to invest more in local supplies and manufacturing facilities. “India is an important source for research and technology. It is not about cost beneficial, but also about the quality and levels of expertise here.”
Flannery also said the company would look at aviation and defence sectors in India. “Any sector whether it is in aerospace or technology, there is a high growth opportunity for everyone,” he said.
Stating that GE was keen on participating in railway projects, he said, “It is a very large business. We definitely want to be a major player in this space.”
The company had participated in a tender process for a multi-billion dollar project, which did not go through. “It is likely to come up now, and we would be pursuing it,” he said, adding it was cleared by the Cabinet last week.
GE is a diversified global infrastructure, finance and media company.
