The gender inequality remains widespread and deeply rooted in many cultures irrespective of international initiatives like Millennium Development Goals to redress the problem, says ‘The State of World Population 2008’ report from United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) released today.
The report points out that women and girls constitute three fifths of the world’s one billion poorest people and girls comprise70 per cent of the 130 million children in the world who are out of school. The report further says that the UNFPA approach integrates work towards human rights and gender equality with cultural sensitivity. The approach encourages change from within, while respecting both national sovereignty and cultural integrity. The report was released in the city by Namita Panda, chairperson of the Orissa State Commission for Women. There is a need for stepping up awareness among people, especially those living in rural areas on issues like gender equality, and human rights, she said after releasing the report.
On human rights, the report says, “The discussion about whether human rights are truly universal has often overlooked the critical interrelationship between human rights and cultures. Human rights protect groups as well as individuals and protection for the collective rights of the people is the right to health including reproductive health.”
The report suggests that partnerships between UNFPA and local non-governmental organisations can create effective strategies to promote human rights and also end human rights abuses.
The report notes that culturally sensitive approaches understand and work with a community’s views and they are essential for reaching the Millennium Development Goals.
