GI Security in pact with Canpro Global Services
BS Reporter / Kolkata Aug 12, 2009, 00:38 IST

Kolkata-based GI Security entered into a 50:50 joint venture with Canada-based security solutions provider Canpro Global Services Inc to bridge skill gap in specialised security training in India.

The company, named Canpro-GI Security India will set up 50 centres across the country over the next two years, imparting training to approximately 18,000 security staff per year.

“Total investment would be close to Rs 10 crore which would be deployed in a phased manner,” said Ashit M Luthra, director of GI Security on the sidelines of the signing of the joint venture agreement in Kolkata.

“Post 26/11 there has been a rising demand for trained specialised security staff. Canpro Global being pioneers in specialised security would partner with GI in this training joint venture and help upgrade the training mechanisms and quality,” added Luthra. Canpro-GI Security India would provide training in guarding, handling security equipment, anti-terror measures, disaster management, post-emergency actions using the expertise of Canpro Global.

“The first training centres are scheduled to be operational by October in Kolkata and Delhi. We hope to break even in one year,” said Luthra. A large chunk of GI Security’s revenue come from corporates. Some of its corporate clients are L&T, Tata Group, Indiabulls, Religare and Shrachi.

Robert Burns of Canpro Global said, “We always wanted to enter into Indian market since there is a huge domestic demand and manpower. We look to catering both the big corporates and the government agencies.” Canpro Global is at present working in a couple of big projects in the Gulf countries, Abu Dhabi, Uganda, Cyprus and so on and is working on the security mechanism of the world’s largest oil refinery and petrochemicals plants.

The company also has operations in Canada, USA, Mexico, South America, Central and East Africa and UAE. The company is working closely with Royal Canadian Mounted police (RCMP) which will be responsible for 2010 Winter Olympic Security mechanism. “We look forward to the Commonwealth Games . We are involved partially with the RCMP in the Winter Olympic and a number of high level initiatives,” said Burns. Canpro-GI Security India is in talks with Defence Security Code, a quasi-governmental organisation and a couple of state governments and the Central government for providing the service after the company starts operations later this month. “Our objective is to provide the government the tools for standardisation of security training, which is largely unmonitored at present,” said Luthra.

Luthra pointed out that at present in India there are approximately 55 lakh private security personnel, most of them not appropriately trained. The Private Security Agency (Regulation) Act, 2005 had been partially enforced in 11 states. Once the act gets fully enforced in all states, private security companies and trained personnel would have to acquire license based on training certificates which would ensure greater scope for doing business in India. At present large chunk of revenue of Canpro-GI Security India will come from the Gulf countries where there is a big demand for security personnel.
