Give jobs only to those born in Maha: Raj Thackeray
BS Reporter / Mumbai Feb 02, 2010, 00:53 IST

Continuing his agitation for the cause of ‘Marathi Manoos’ (sons of the soil), Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray today said that jobs in Maharashtra should be provided only to those who were born in the state.

“Just because one can write, read and speak Marathi does not entitle him to local jobs...For getting jobs in Mumbai, one has to be a Maharashtrian by birth. Just the knowledge of reading and writing the language will not do,” he said at a party meeting here.

The MNS chief also criticised party members for distributing Marathi alphabet books to north Indian taxi drivers last week. “Think over the type of protest you were undertaking. Who told you to teach them Marathi?” Raj said.

The MNS transport wing had distributed Marathi alphabet books to the taxi drivers, giving them a deadline of 40 days to learn the language.

Thackeray’s latest statement is expected to spark more controversy as the MNS chief will be on a statewide tour, starting February 13, to reach out to the masses. Over 80 offences have already been registered against him in and outside the state for his violent agitation against the residents of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

Thackeray’s statement comes at a time when the Maharashtra politics is feeling the heat over the issue of giving taxi permits to Marathis. The MNS chief has already insisted that about 4,500 new taxi permits in Mumbai should be given to Maharashtrians by birth.

He dared the state government that his party would not allow a single taxi to hit the Mumbai roads if Marathi Manoos are not given new taxi permits.

Mr.Chennai you are right historically & even today India is linguistically & culturally diverse. This diversity is responsible for disunity & bickering over petty issues. As a result aliens (Afghans, Turks, Mughals, British etc) have been able to dominate using divide & rule. Indonesia was also similarly linguistically diversified however now they have one language "Bhasha". Similarly India needs to have one. If majority support Tamil then its OK. If todays generation of North Indians accept diversity it is equal to putting the issue under carpet (not solution) as after 25, 50 or 100 years same issue will be discussed again.

It is unfortunate that nobody is seeing the root cause for the problem. The problem is not in North Indians settling in Mumbai. The problem has araised because of North Indians attitude towards the concept of India. If NIs can realise that 'India is not a Hindi Nation' and 'India is a country of linguistic and cultural diversity', all problems will be solved. North Indians should learn to accept the diversity of India. They are not embracing the language & culture of the State where they settle down. Rather they force down their own language & Culture on all other Indian States in an aristocssratic way. It is unfortunate that no media discusses about this attitude problem of NIs and the need to educate the concept of diversity to all North Indians right from their childhood.

Agreed about their "hindi mein bolo" attitude. But giving Marathi booklets to taxi drivers was a good idea. This Raj Thackeray just wants to create more trouble.

When I read about his party giving Marathi booklets to taxi drivers, I thought this person had developed some common sense at last. Now, I realize that his workers are far more sensible than him!

I think, this is just going like a quarrel of kids. People Hindi/Marathi both should understand that they are human being living in a society. They need to help each other. Try to settle down the quarrel. Just try to think another way & be co-operative for eachother without kipping attitude.
