Contending that tobacco companies involved in organising various events were engaging in "brand extension" to promote their products, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry has issued a notification banning such sponsorships.

The notification to this effect was issued on February 27, official sources said here today.

Citing examples of events like bravery awards, officials said this notification will prevent companies from promoting their products indirectly.
